List all versions |
AFK - Away From Keyboard. This indicates that you are still logged into the game, but will not be able to "talk" or interact for a period of time. In most mogs this is a polite way to say you need to do something other than play the game... such as answer the phone, get food or drink, or use the bathroom.
Agro - from aggressive, depicts a mob that will attack a player without being provoked
Battlemover - A superheavy class of mecha.. often has more than one operator or a small crew (solo versions DO exist, however... most mecha of this type have at least one pilot and one gunner). Often designed for "artillery/siege" type fighting and may need a "spotter". also sometimes known as Mobile Armor.
Battler - a player in the Battleverse VR world.
Battlesuit - collective term for the suits of robotic-augmented powered armor that most Battlers wear... put simply, they can be regarded as a "wearable tank", equipped with anything from a reinforced steelplast quarterstaff to plasma-based weapons of mass destruction. Also called Mobile Suit.
Battleverse, The - this is a highly advanced Virtual Reality (VR) system invented by Dr. XXX of Battlebazaar.net.
Brawler - A Tank sub-class that favors the use of physical (unarmed) or melee attacks over ranged weapons.
Crafter - AKA Tradeskiller. This is a player who often builds things for other players or himself. Some players do nothing but tradeskills, but I'm (Eiji) still up in the air if we should find ways for crafters to get out into the field, or mull over the concept of a "combat crafter" (like a battle engineer, ones who build things like fortifications or artilery emplacements).
Cyberdemon - see Daemon
Daemon - term used for a type of semi-sentient, highly aggressive mobs of currently unknown origin (they are actually viruses). Also called Cyberdemon, or just Demon
Deck - The device that allows the use of Hacks, used as an expansion to the main battle computer of a suit. Can also be used to defeat security systems, or use special hacks to subvert base systems (like security drones) to serve the hacker.
Faction Standing - this is how much you are liked/disliked by a certain faction or clan. Not all factions like each other, and your own clan (if you join or start one) will have a standing with the major faction clans as well. This often decides how you are regarded by NPCs and certain kinds of mobs (like if you are liked or are KOS)
Gating - the use of a Hack or other means to get from one zone to another... often uses "Input/Output (or I/O) Nodes", but there are some Hacks that can do this too.. some will take you to the nearest friendly base or town, and some others will take you to specific areas or Battleplexes within the game world (though the legality of such hacks can be rather dubious) Also called Zoning.
GM - Game Master. This is a person who is, for all sakes of argument, a "God" of the game world.. their main purposes are to settle disputes, correct bugs, and sometimes will put up special events.
Gunner - Tank sub-class that favors the use of ranged weapons like rifles, cannons, and missiles over close-in melee attacks. If the player mixes the Stealth background as well, then Sniping becomes available.
Hack - collective term for the "ICE" that most players use. Often has several "elemental" types. See also ICE, Totem
Hacker - term for a Battler who specializes in the use of Hacks over physical fighting. Often preceded with "White" (legal hacks or healing), "Grey" (semi-legal, Underworld, Rebel Daemons), or "Black" (highly illegal, Syndicate, Daemons). In the classic "sword-and-sorcery" model, this person would be called a Caster.
ICE - from Intruder Countermeasure Encryption, or "Hacks". These are "scripting lines" meant to protect your mecha (buffs), attack targets (nukes), to summon help (summon drones), or to "persuade" a mob to help the player (mezz, from "Mesmerize", aka "charming")
In-Point - Insertion Point, where you enter a mission area... may not always be a "safe" area to come in.
KOS - Kill On Sight. what you become if you tick off a certain faction too much.
LFG/LFT - Looking For Group or Looking For Team. These acronyms both mean the same thing. This is what you say in chat to indicate that you want to join a team or party.
LFM - Looking For More This is when there is a party with only a couple members, and the leader is looking for others to join in...most often, the leader will state what type of player is needed in the party when making this "call" (such as if you need a tank or healer).
LFW - Looking For Work. This is used by crafters who are seeking a large or special "order" of crafted items
Merc - short for "mercenary"... typically this is the term for members of the Mercenaries' Guild, but some Bounty Hunters might find themselves being addresses as this as well.
Mob - from Mobile OBject. This is any creature that is not an NPC or controlled by a Battler.
NPC - Non-Player Character. This is the collective term for merchants, guards, non-player pit mechanics, arena officials, major personalities (like Keiko and DJ Bro), some of the more intelligent Demons, and other "people" in the game world that are NOT controlled by players or a GM.
NSO - Neuro-Synaptic Overload. This is a unique medical affliction known to only affect Battleverse Players... buildups of this affliction are known to have minor effects on suit hardware and will often cause the pilot of a battlesuit to experience psychosomatic reactions to the VR environment (such as coughing and watery eyes when walking through a cloud of virtual smoke). "Backlashes" are known to cause minor to moderate headaches, blurred or double-vision, slowed reaction time, and sometimes momentary blackouts or fainting. Exceptionally severe cases have been known to cause minor heart attacks, and in a few cases, death (however, fatalities are extremely rare and have up to now always been the result of the victim having a pre-existing nerve disorder such as epilepsy). Periodic "rest breaks" can cause this affliction to reduce in severity over time -- the exact reason why this happens, however, is still unknown.
Pet - this is MMO slang for a mob that is controlled by a player. They are either summoned or "charmed" from existing mobs (the latter being more risky, since they often tend to attack their former masters when the charming spell wears off).
Punk - (as a verb) to sabotage, to be defeated, or to double-cross. (as a noun) a very gritty put-down. (past tense Punk'd)
Round - shooter term, refers to the amount of ammunition or reagent used for a single shot or attack. Often used to say how much ammo you need, or how much ammo you have in an item used to hold ammo (such as a clip, drum, belt, or ammo hopper).
Social - a mob that is considered "social" will often bring reinforcements (or "adds") if attacked.
Stealther - a Battler that relies on the use of cunning, evasion, and stealth to get a mission done - rather than Hacks or standup firefights. This class often employs the use of active camouflage, locksmith-configured decks to hack through gates and locked doors, booby traps or trip-mines, and EMP-based weaponry (along with some rather "dirty pool"-type combat tactics).
Tank - a type of player who's main job is to fight and take/give massive amounts of damage, often with the use of heavy firepower or melee attacks.
Totem - a group of Hacks that are part of a certain "element/aspect" of the Battleverse. Some examples are Iron, Ether, Fire, Water, etc. Although all kinds of spells can be found in any totem, most are "skewed" to a particular type of spell.. For example, the Fire Totem is shunted towards direct damage, and damage-over-time spells.. but has damage shields and light heals as well. (I'm still mulling over the idea of "opposing elements".. such as Wood is weak against Fire, and Fire is weak against water....-Eiji)
WTS/WTB - Want To Sell or Want To Buy. This is used in trade chat to indicate that you have an item to sell to a player rather than an NPC Merchant. If you are saying "WTB", then you are intrested in buying the item from a player. Not every item in the game is of use to players, and sometimes salvage might require repairs or refurbishment that could decrease its value.
WTT - Want To Trade. Like WTB/WTS, this indicates that you have an item of some value but want a different item in exchange instead of money.
X-Point - eXtraction Point. often the way to leave a mission area
Zoning - see Gating
