An example of the failed headers are:
Received: from 173-26-171-221.client.mchsi.com (173-26-171-221.client.mchsi.com [173.26.171.221])
by mx.google.com with ESMTP id k2si11927419rvb.2.2009.05.25.04.46.00;
Mon, 25 May 2009 04:46:02 -0700 (PDT)
Received-SPF: fail (google.com: domain of pyragone1962@battlebazaar.net does not designate 173.26.171.221 as permitted sender) client-ip=173.26.171.221;
As indicted by Google (above), these messages are not originating on our server, nor any server authorized to send mail on our behalf.
If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me at mailto:abuse@battlebazaar.netmailto:abuse@battlebazaar.net> or mailto:daveb@battlebazaar.net.mailto:daveb@battlebazaar.net.>
Our servers are set to require authentication to send mail; we do not operate an open relay, and so far close to 100% of the messages that I've seen bouncing have been from non-existant usernames. The issue has gotten bad enough that I have disabled collection of bounced e-mails.
If you have conerns over contacting me directly, feel free to send the report to Failed to find InterWikisTopic [_InterWikis].-isp.com. For example, if you have Yahoo, please send the messages to abuse@yahoo.com, or if you have hotmail, send them to abuse@hotmail.com and so on. Your ISP will verify what I've said here, that reverse name lookup does not resolve to one of our servers, and does not resolve to our domain.
If you are contacting your abuse/IT guy, feel free to mention that if they had enabled SPF on their mail server, the messages would have been rejected (as indicated by the excerpt from google above) and would never have reached your mailbox. For information about the SPF initiative, go here: http://openspf.org.
Please be aware that there is nothing we can do, because of how the Internet works, to actually stop the spam from this unauthorized sender. When they submit a message, they can claim any address they like. Again, if you have any concerns, please let me know and I will demonstrate it. I am aware it sucks, and it sucks even more for us because we cannot do anything about it.
Most anti-spam sites have protections to deal with this sort of a problem; we're watching to see legitimate failures just in case any of them aren't smart enough to check the SPF.
